The College of Agricultural Engineering and Post Harvest Technology (CAEPHT), Ranipool, Gangtok is one of the constituent colleges of Central Agricultural University, Imphal. The students of CAEPHT mostly belong to various states of NEH region. The college was established in 2006 with an objective of addressing issues like shortage of trained human resource in the discipline of agricultural engineering, promotion of farm mechanization and adoption of improved post-harvest technologies, quality production of value added products through processing, effective utilization of natural resources including renewable sources of energy and agricultural by-products, co-products and residues and to facilitate establishment of need based agro industries.

The region offer vast scope for organic production and processing of variety of products, to increase the farm productivities. In the region, due to typical topography of land, acidic soils, poor resource management, lack of mechanization and shortage of trained manpower, the farm income has been generally low. The graduates of this college have major role and challenge to improve the level of farm mechanization, create infrastructure for localised value addition and post-harvest management, establish need based agro-industries in the region with over all efforts for the development of the region. The college has now completed its 10th year and six batches of students have passed out during 2010 to 2015. Their performance in the competitive examinations at National level viz ICAR-JRF and GATE Scholarships has been very satisfactory and praise worthy. . Till date, 149 number of B.Tech. and M.Tech. students have passed out from the college out of which 90 opted for higher studies, 05 joined ICAR as Agricultural Scientists, 05 joined government departments, 03 joined industry.

During the first decade of its establishment, CAEPHT learnt many lessons, developed its impressive infrastructure, produced about 149 highly performing graduates and post graduates, trained more than 1000 farmers, farm women, entrepreneurs and extension education functionaries and delivered more than 37 location specific technologies. It has operated 12 externally funded research projects including prestigious NAIP funded value chain project and six All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs) funded by ICAR in addition to DST, DBT and PCRA funded projects. Of recent, a convergence based Farmers Produce Processing-cum-Skill Development Centre has been established in the college with active partnership of Agriculture-Horticulture, Rural Management & Development and Capacity Building Departments of Govt. of Sikkim, FPOs and CAU-CAEPHT. APEDA and NIAM have shown their interest in this project. In addition MoFPI has sanctioned grant to establish Food Quality Testing Centre, while DOAC has sponsored establishment of Farm Equipment & Machinery Testing Centre, The CAEPHT is recieving request from industries to test farm equipment before their introduction in NEH region. The college has developed single row light weight manually operated rice seeder, animal drawn peg planker-cum puddler, single row and two row animal drawn zero till drills, single & multiple maize cob roasting grills, portable solar powered force convection dryer etc. In addition to ongoing efforts on design refinement and performance evaluation of several improved farm equipment suitable for NEH region, the College has also come out with package of improved post harvest and value addition technologies for ginger, pineapples, high value cut flowers and aromatic crops (lemongrass, java citronella etc.). One vocational training programme was successfully initiated in March 2012 which helped in training of three rural youth by June 2012. The trained personnel are now in the process of establishing their own workshops to locally manufacture the need based tools/equipment and provide repair-service facilities to needy farmers. The college also successfully organized five days Capacity Building Programme of Extension Functionaries belonging to KVKs of various states. In addition, 20 off-campus frontline demonstrations were also organized.
