About CAU

The Central Agricultural University (CAU) was established in 1993 at Imphal, Manipur by an act of Parliament under the Central Agricultural University Act. 1992 (Act No. 40 of 1992, dated 26th December, 1992). The act empowered CAU, Imphal to establish need based Agricultural Education Institutions in the North-Eastern Hill (NEH) region of India covering six states viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.

The above mentioned states of NEH region are well known for their rich biological and cultural diversity. People of the NEH region, by and large, depend on agriculture and allied activities to meet their livelihood necessities. The vibrant and highly varying agro-climatic conditions in the region require well trained human resource for development and management of region specific agricultural technologies.

Keeping in view the needs of different states of NEH region in terms of agricultural education, research, development and extension education activities, the CAU, Imphal has developed integrated programmes of teaching, research and extension education. The University offers 07 Undergraduate and 25 Masters Degree programmes in different subjects through its seven constituent colleges established in different NEH states under its jurisdiction. The university maintains common academic calendar for all courses except B.V. Sc. & AH, which is governed by the Minimum Standards for Veterinary Education (MSVE Regulations of 1993 and 2008, Veterinary Council of India). Since its establishment, the CAU, has been continuously strengthening the teaching, research and extension education facilities, infrastructure and man power as per the recommendations of various committees in Detailed Project Reports of respective constituent colleges of University.
